The Liturgical Colours – You may have wondered what the various colours of the altar hangings and priest’s vestments signify… These are used to differentiate the days and seasons of the Church calendar and to celebrate certain rites and sacraments.

  • BLUE: Advent The season of preparation for the coming of the King.
  • PURPLE: Lent Signifies penitence.
  • WHITE: Christmas, Easter seasons and on certain other great feast days. Also for funerals and weddings.
  • GREEN: Pentecost and Epiphany seasons. Symbolizes hope, regeneration and immortality.
  • RED: The Day of Pentecost, Palm Sunday, Confirmation and on days marking the martyrdom of Saints. Red is the colour for the Holy Spirit and also signifies martyrdom and love for God.
  • BARE ALTAR: Good Friday
